Q: I have a coin that has an "S" on it. Does that mean it is made of silver?
A: No. You are seeing the mintmark. "S" means that the coin was minted in San Francisco.
Q: When were coins actually made of silver?
A: All dollars, half dollars, quarters and dimes minted in 1964 and prior were made of 90% silver. Half dollars minted from 1965 through and including 1970 were made of 40% silver. Some, but not all, nickles minted in 1942 were made of silver (war nickels). All nickels minted from 1943 - 1945 were made of 35% silver.
Q: Are $2 bills worth anything?
A: It depends. If your $2 bill is a series 1963 or earlier, it is probably worth more than face value. Unless it has a fancy serial number, any $2 bill that is a series 1976 or later, is worth exactly $2.
